prevalence and molecular identification of mediterranean glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in khuzestan province, iran
Authors
abstract
background: glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (g6pd) deficiency is the most frequent genetic enzymatic disorder in human, which is inherited as an x-linked gene. it encodes a housekeeping enzyme, which is vital for cell survival. according to previous investigations, mediterranean mutation (c563t) of g6pd gene is the most prevalent mutation in some provinces of iran and neighboring countries. we aimed to study the mediterranean mutation of g6pd gene in khuzestan province of iran. methods: a total of 1064 randomly selected male blood samples were selected in ahvaz, khuzestan province, in 2008 and screened for g6pd deficiency using fluorescent spot test method. in order to determine the frequency of g6pd mediterranean variant, 144 g6pd deficient samples were analyzed by pcr-rflp method. results: eighty-one out of 1064 random selected screened samples were g6pd deficient, so a 7.6% frequency was obtained for g6pd deficiency. in addition, 105 out of 144 collected deficient samples had mediterranean mutation that resulted in a 72.91% allel frequency. conclusion: corresponding to other investigations in middle east countries and some provinces of iran, we found that the mediterranean mutation of g6pd gene was the most prevalent variant and g6pd deficiency occurred in a high frequency.

Molecular Characterization of Cosenza Mutation among Patients with Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency in Khuzestan Province, Southwest Iran
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is one of the most common hereditary enzymatic disorders in human, increases the vulnerability of erythrocytes to oxidative stress. It is also characterized by remarkable molecular and biochemical heterogeneity. According to previous investigations, G6PD Cosenza (G1376C) is a common G6PD mutation in some parts of Iran. Therefore in the present...

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an enzymopathy affecting about 400 millionpeople worldwide. The distribution of G6PD deficiency and the molecular genetics of this enzyme vary widelyamong different ethnic groups. The aim of this study was to find out the frequency of G6PD deficiency andcharacterize the Mediterranean type mutation in deficient individuals ...

Background and Aims: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is a global problem and the most common cause of jaundice in neonates. Hence, this study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of G6PD deficiency in Jiroft city in southern Kerman. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out from 2016 to 2019. Blood samples were taken from all patie...
full textPrevalence of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency among Male Donors in Shiraz, Southern Iran
The overall incidence of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in Iranian population is estimated around 10%-14.9%. G6PD deficiency is an X-linked disorder and 80% of donors are usually male. At present, donors’ blood is not routinely screened for G6PD deficiency in Iran blood bank where for detecting such enzyme deficiency, reliance is placed on pre-donation data. Thus, the G6PD ...

Background: Jaundice is affecting over 60-80 percent of neonates in the first week of life. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, which is an important cause of pathologic hyperbilirubinemia, can lead to hemolytic anemia, jaundice and kernicterus. The present study was performed to determine the prevalence of G6PD deficiency among icteric neonates in Shirvan, Iran. Methods: This...
